OLDS & SON T-10 "STUDIO BRILLIANT BELL" MODEL PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET WITH ORIGINAL PATINATED LACQUER IN NEAR MINT PLUS CONDITION I have been playing horns for 64 years... Collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, producing custom finishes, and building custom horns for 53 years. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so. All my horns are gig ready...
They have been completely disassembled, cleaned, valves are hand lapped and precision adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary, all slide tubes are hand lapped and polished, and then the horn is re-assembled and play tested. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is a beautifully aged and little played example of a 65 year old Studio model built during the years when quality was paramount at the Olds factory...
Reynolds was plant superintendent and Zig Kanstul had been working as an apprentice since 1953. He would take over the helm in 1960 when Mr. The Studio Brilliant Bell model was introduced in late 1948 and remained unchanged until 1965 when it was re-designed and completely nickel plated. This Studio is the finest playing example I ever come across, thus it has remained in my collection for many years, and now it is time to find it a new owner.
The horn comes with its original case and #3 mouthpiece. This trumpet is a medium weight 2 lb. Free and open blowing trumpet with that signature BIG, FAT Olds tonality. Flexible, responsive and known for their outstanding projection, Studio's will perform with superb results throughout all registers. Tone is a bit on the bright side (but not brittle), somewhat warm (thanks to the solid nickel silver bell flare), and always FAT!They make an excellent choice as a jazz axe, but with the right mouthpiece, can also perform very well playing commercial/ legit styles. Peeling paint off the back wall of an auditorium presents no problem whatsoever. However, the Studio can back off with excellent results when playing ballads or soft passages. Horn will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue. Agile and efficient, and having an extensive range of tonal colors, this trumpet offers a consistent core of sound throughout all registers and dynamics, with a pitch center to match all its other outstanding performance characteristics. It easily matches and blends with other trumpets and trumpet players. The trumpet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled... Its sound is very centered and focused. This horn has superb intonation... The low register is not flat, and is very resonant.
The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation. From the Olds Central website: "The Studio "Brilliant Bell - made by spinning solid nickel silver for strength and brilliance - creates a trumpet with brilliant resonance, bright quality of tone, and unusual resistance to mute dents.Distinctive bracing and styling details show Olds craftsmanship at its best. According to Zig Kanstul, the models of trumpets made by Olds in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's, all were made with the same bell mandrel, to the same specifications - from the Ambassador all the way to the Mendez (although some models used different materials). The only major difference between the vintage Olds models were the bells... Some were all brass, brass with a solid nickel silver bell flare as found on this Studio model, Rey-O-loy (bronze), and a solid nickel silver stem with a rose brass flare.
The only exceptions were the Opera (which had a larger bore) and the Custom Crafted model [which had a newly designed "Ultrasonic" spun bell with a narrower taper]. According to another famous Olds designer, Olds was a "one tolerance shop" - in other words, all models of horns were made to the same tolerance. In particular, it is said that this was true from the Ambassador trumpet all the way through to the Mendez.
Mechanically, the trumpet is in superb condition... The valves are bright and shiny without staining nor pitting, and have near factory spec compression. All slides operate with silky smoothness. The original lacquer (99%) has a mottled chocolate patina that is quite beautiful. Many Olds' horns from this era tend to patina in this fashion, and IMHO looks great against the bright nickel silver bell and trim. There was a tiny wear spot on the 1st valve casing baluster, and another on the lower face of the 3rd casing. Both have been spot lacquered to prevent further tarnishing.
I have installed new felts, corks, and beryllium springs. I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises". Finish - Original lacquer over yellow brass and nickel silver. Serial # - 203XXX Bore Size.
460 medium large bore Features - Spun solid nickel silver bell flare; nickel silver trim; 3rd valve slide w/ adjustable ring. Accessories - Original wood shelled case in good condition... The bottom has a number of tears, but the rest of the case is in very good condition. Also included is the original Olds #3 mouthpiece. I do my very best to be as accurate as humanly possible in my descriptions. Just a musician and collector.
